"Dr Kenneth Paul Tan, 47, who has been instrumental in helping set up the Asian Film Archive in 2005, says before the archive was set up, pieces of Singapore cinema 'had been archived outside of Singapore until we finally had a film archive of our own'. As chair of The Necessary Stage board, he also encouraged the theatre group to create their own archive: 'This is not just to preserve a legacy, but to also contribute to future artistic production across disciplines.' He notes the importance of archives as a resource for artists, scholars and the public: 'So much is lost, sometimes irretrievably, if artists neglect to do this properly.'"
